Day cruises let you explore Cancún's offshore islands. Isla Mujeres is the most popular choice, though tours to Cozumel and to non-inhabited Contoy, the bird sanctuary, are also available (see a travel agent) Cruises are meant to be entertaining and in addition to open bar and lunch, may include a lot of shipboard fun and games, even live music. Ferry services to both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel also exist: those to Isla Mujeres leave every 20 minutes from Puerto Juárez located 10 minutes north of downtown Cancún; the crossing takes 15 to 30 minutes. Ferries to Cozumel leave hourly starting at 6am from Playa del Carmen, located 45 min. south of Cancún; the crossing takes 50 min. Isla Mujeres is very low-key and laid back, Cozumel is more developed and considered the diving mecca of the region. Both are great getaways and very different from Cancún. Flights to Cozumel available from Playa del Carmen and Cancún. For more information on Cancún's sister islands turn to the relevant section of this guide.
