In contrast to ultramodern, high-density Cancún, the surrounding area is wild and undeveloped, perfect for eco-adventures. Worthy examples include birding trips to Isla Contoy and tours of the Sian Kaán Biosphere Reserve, a 1.3 million acre coastal ecosystem of tropical forests, lagoons and wetlands. The reserve is habitat for more than 350 species of birds and the domain of pumas, jaguars, monkeys and crocodiles. For tours, contact the non-profit, Amigos de Sian Ka’an.
For nature buffs and birders, the Río Lagartos National Park, a four-hour drive north of Cancún is also a must. This salt marsh and estuary nesting ground for some 30,000 flamingos is also the habitat for another 270 native and migratory species. In the Riviera Maya nature parks such as Xcaret, Xel-Há and Tres Ríos provide encounters with nature and a range of activities such as horseback riding, watersports (snorkeling, diving, kayaks, fishing), swimming, trail biking, jungle walks, even swimming-with-dolphins.
