Cancún is an angler’s paradise. Bass, dorado, barracuda, bonito, tuna and grouper bite year round, while from April to August the billfish (white and blue marlin sailfish) are running and Cancún becomes the headquarters of the international fishing tournaments that are staged in the resort, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya at different times during the season.
There are two major fishing grounds and trolling is the name of the game: the Grieta, an underwater valley of tremendous proportions and depth that runs along the eastern coast of Isla Mujeres; and the Corrientada, the fast-moving shipping lanes located east of Contoy. International rules of catch and release apply for marlin and other game fish.
Sport cruisers with chairs, outriggers and up to six lines are available for 4, 6 and 8-hour charters; boats can also be shared. All charters include captain, first mate, bait, beer, soft drinks and lunch.
