The taxi fare in the city center is currently $12 pesos. Rides to destinations outside the city limits are more. Taxis hired from taxi ranks or sitios charge more than the basic rate. Fares within the Hotel Zone are higher and should be posted in the taxis and at your hotel. If not, ask the bellboy the going rate to your destination, and agree on the price before getting in the vehicle. Many taxis offer private tours. Buses are cheap, the fare is currently $6 pesos. Two companies operate routes linking different areas of the city. Routes 1 and 2 serve the Hotel Zone, look for the word "Hoteles" on the windscreen. Buses also make the run from Tulum Ave. to Puerto Júarez and Punta Sam. During rush hour and on Sundays the Hotel Zone buses are crowded.
