 Since the beginning, Cancún has attracted major social, cultural and political events, many of them world-class. In 1981, just 11 years after its founding, 23 heads of state met here for the historic North-South Reunion, and in 1983, the Latin American presidents who were members of the Contadora group congregated for another groundbreaking meeting. The Miss Universe Pageant was broadcast from Cancún in 1989 and the resort currently stages a Jazz Festival and events celebrating Mexican and Caribbean culture, a marathon and the annual Triathlon World Cup, in addition to other international sporting competitions.
