During the post-Classic period, Cozumel served as both a seaport and a religious retreat. It was the first port-of-call on a trade route that ran from Xicalango (Campeche) on the Gulf Coast of México to Nito, Guatemala and Naco, Honduras. The port of Cozumel handled a considerable volume of trade and its merchants were affluent and politically influential.
The island was furthermore sacred to the goddess Ixchel, and home to one of the most renowned oracles in ancient Mesoamerica: Ah Kin, or ‘He of the Sun’ named for the sun mask he wore.
