Paraíso North.
Located near the cruise ship dock, Paraíso North consists of three long reefs running parallel to the shore. Inhabitants include huge coral heads, sponges two meters in diameter and large schools of brilliant, Blue Chromis (Chromis cyaneus). Maximum depth: 45 ft.
Paraíso South.
Two reefs, each about 500 meters long are thick with candy bass, sea cucumbers, numerous varieties of angel fish and other exotic denizens of the not-so-deep. Maximum depth 45 ft.
Chankanaab.
A good location for sunken objects – some deliberately scuttled. You’ll see anchors, cannon, a fishing vessel and a bronze Christ. Chankanaab is the only reef where the current runs south. Maximum depth 55 ft.
Balones de Chankanaab.
This reef is in slightly deeper water. Its name (balls of Chankanaab) comes from the quantity of coral heads growing here. There are pillars, or craggy mountains of coral four to 10 meters tall, riddled with tunnels inhabited by creatures such as lobster, moray eels and manta rays. Best at 60-70 ft.
Palancar Gardens.
A section of the larger Palancar Reef, with depths of 40-70 ft and an easy current. Coral grows profusely and fish are abundant.
La Herradura.
A particularly beautiful reef. It features a curve of coral buttresses, canyons, and terraces with dropoffs starting as shallow as 30 ft.
Villa Blanca Dropoff.
The wall’s average depth is 70 ft, but the dropoff plunges for miles. Drift diving is the name of the game here. Highlights: shoals of fish, sponges and sea fans. Access: Villa Blanca Hotel beach. Depths of 50-100 ft.
