A short boat ride from Cancún, this tiny island is the laid-back Caribbean of yesteryear, something which makes it a very popular day trip destination. Passenger boats depart from Puerto Juárez, Punta Sam and several docks in the Hotel Zone.
Relatively little is known about the island’s ancient history. The Maya probably used it as a pilgrimage site, maybe a secondary port of call. Today, the only building of ancient Mayan construction is a small stone edifice (temple or lighthouse) standing alone on the island’s southern tip.
