Campeche

Campeche City was the first Spanish settlement on the peninsula. Fortified to stave off pirates, it is the only walled city in Central and North America today. The ramparts enclose the historic center of Campeche, recently declared a World Heritage Site. The baluartes (wall towers) are called Soledad, Santiago, San Pedro and San Pablo. City sights include the Regional Museum, the Cathedral and the San Francisco and San Román churches. Worth a visit are the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and the Calakmul archaeological zone; ancient sites elsewhere in the state are Becán, Chicanná, Xpujil, Edzná, and the island of Jaina (famous for its clay figurines). The state also boasts craft villages and colonial monuments. Travel services are good throughout the state.
