The gateway to Central America, Chiapas has some of the most spectacular scenery, in Mexico: Agua Azul Falls, Misol-Ha Falls, Montes Azules, Montebello Lakes and the Sumidero Canyon are nature reserves and harbor a variety of wildlife. Ancient Mayan sites include Palenque, Bonampak, Yaxchilán and Toniná. Many communities boast colonial churches and San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapa de Corzo and Comitán are worth a visit. Tuxtla is the state capital. Places of interest include the San Marcos Cathedral, Casa de las Artesanías, Regional Museum, Teatro de Ciudad (theater) and the Miguel Álvarez del Toro Zoo.
