Yucatán is the location of Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and the Puuc Route sites. The state has nature reserves, ancient ruins and colonial churches and convents, some of the latter dating from the 16th century. Henequen haciendas from the 19th century still stand on the outskirts of Mérida, the state capital, and the countryside is rife with native Maya communities.
