 Like their ancestors, today’s Maya are extremely devout. Every aspect of their lives is influenced by religious beliefs and supernatural beings and they take the ancient rituals very seriously. Visitors who wish to witness a ritual must first ask the village authorities and ask for permission to take photos – this may not be granted in some cases. Entry to the sanctuaries where the Cross is kept is strictly prohibited.
