The allure of Quintana Roo extends beyond Cancún; in fact, Cancún is just the beginning. From the resort to the ancient city of Tulum a series of destinations runs down the coast. This part of the state is called the Riviera Maya.
Carretera 307 covers the length of this 130-km strip, flanked by jungle and occasionally interrupted by roads shooting off at right angles. These lead to the Riviera Maya’s towns and resort communities, as well as its stunning, white-sand beaches. The coast is set with cenotes, coves and ancient ruins, and the Great Maya Reef is just offshore.
During ancient times, the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula was a thriving trade area. After the Conquest the region became a wilderness and stayed that way until the early 1900s when foreign companies began exploiting the area’s chicle resin and its precious hardwoods.
Moving south from Cancún, the most interesting stops along the Riviera Maya are: Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Xcaret, Puerto Aventuras, the chain of beaches from Xpu-Há to Akumal, Xel-Há and Tulum. Cozumel lies off the coast from Playa del Carmen and the ancient city of Cobá is a short drive from Tulum.
