A few kilometers down the road from Xpu-Há (36 km from Playa del Carmen) is the coastal development with most seniority. Akumal (“Place of the Turtle” in Maya) is located on a tranquil bay with the reef just offshore. Two species of rare sea turtle (loggerhead and green) return to the Akumal beaches every spring to lay their eggs which are then protected by local conservationists.
Akumal is a major dive site and the bay is a good spot for snorkeling. Just to the north is Half Moon Bay with its condos, and still further north is the Yalkú inlet.
Owned by local diver and photographer, Gonzalo Arcila, Akumal Dive Shop offers a variety of dive excursions, cave diving and a catamaran cruise to Xaac, a tiny bay only accessible by sea. A Mayan temple or lookout crowns a rocky promontory beside the bay.
Greater Akumal has several entrances, each leading to a different part of Akumal and slightly different services, though all lead to food, lodging and the beach.
