Cobá enjoyed close ties with the Maya of the Petén (Guatemala). Methods of construction appear similar: blocks of stone, reinforced with mortar and surfaces covered with stucco, then painted red. The lintels and figures found in niches were painted a variety of colors. Other elements found in Cobá include recessed lintels and niche figures pictured upside down, or 'descending'. Some of the smaller structures recall architecture found along Quintana Roo's Caribbean shore called 'east coast' or Costa Oriental. Cobá has been only superficially restored and little studied. Artifacts found to date include stelae and molded stucco fragments showing glyphs and the vestiges of murals in Las Pinturas group.
