Cobá is surrounded by Mayan communities, whose artisans work in wood and stone, and whose women embroider the hipiles or dresses worn in the Yucatán. Most of the locals speak Maya and Spanish as a second language. The road runs through areas of jungle, cornfields and villages where thatched huts predominate.
