Known as Xaman-Há in ancient times, Playa del Carmen was settled by fishermen from the pre-Classic period onwards, and was the embarkation point for the sacred island of Cozumel, site of a shrine dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. Women from all over the Yucatán made the perilous crossing to the island in open canoes. A few structures from the period are still visible in the town; the temple in Playacar is the most accessible.
