Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin Botanical Garden

Located one kilometer south of Puerto Morelos, the Barrera Marín Botanical Garden protects over 60 acres of jungle and marshland vegetation. Sites of interest range from a post-Classic Mayan ruin to a replica of a chicle harvesters camp. There are areas devoted to wild orchids, bromeliads, cacti, agaves and medicinal plants and a nursery of native species, examples of traditional Mayan housing and a lookout tower for sweeping views of the area. Wildlife is plentiful, especially avifauna, and though the park doesn’t open until 9 a.m., caretakers will let birders in at dawn. Spider monkeys, iguanas, foxes, agouti and great curassow are occasionally seen. Insect repellent is de rigeur.
