The adventurers, John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, already known for their journeys in Central America, arrived at Tulum in 1841. They cleared the vegetation, studied the city and what remained of its structures and published their findings a year later. Frederick Catherwood’s drawings of El Castillo are famous.
Later, in the 20th century archaeological research continued under the consecutive directorships of Samuel Lothrop, William Sanders and Arthur Miller.
