The locals say Xel-Há is the greatest natural aquarium in the world, and they may be right. The chain of inlets, lagoons, cenotes and underground rivers is surrounded by jungle. The waters are calm and crystal-clear, a mix of freshwater springs and ocean. Swimmer-friendly fish make the place a delight, and in areas recently opened to the public, visitors float down the waterways in oversized inner-tubes. Swimming and snorkeling are permitted in certain areas and the use of suntan lotion is prohibited. Fishing is not allowed. Park services include changing rooms, shops, restaurants, snorkel rentals and a dolphin program. Xel-Há is 54 km (45 mins) from Playa del Carmen,115 km from Cancún. Pay at the gate, or purchase tickets beforehand in Cancún or Playa. The archaeological site is managed by INAH and is not part of the Xel-Há park; a separate entry fee is levied.
