 Annual festivals are a serious affair, especially Carnival, with its floats and contests.
The city’s ethnic profile is an interesting one, thanks to the arrival of foreigners who began migrating into the area at the turn of the century: Indians, Lebanese, Chinese, western Europeans, etc. And finally, the emergence of Cancún as the gateway to the Maya World has brought Chetumal, another gateway, into focus. Chetumal is the natural jumping off point for excursions to a wide variety of destinations within the area.
