 For years, Southern Quintana Roo was ignored by investors in love with Cancún, the state’s megaresort to the north. But times change and while Cancún is still growing, the Costa Maya is drawing eyes south, specifically to Majahual as a logical ‘base of operations’. Majahual is a traditional fishing village with a few rustic seafood restaurants, about to become your best bet for a Caribbean getaway – au natural.
There’s a landing strip, some small hotel and bungalow developments on the beach and a cruise ship terminal. The access roads in and around Majahual have been finished and will link the village to other beaches or sites targeted for development such as Río Indio, Placer, Uvero, Punta Pulticub and Río Huach.
The Costa Maya highway will stretch north to Punta Herrero, a fishing village on the shores of Espíritu Santo Bay, in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
Majahual’s perfect, palm-lined beaches and crystal-clear waters were made for sunning, bathing and snorkeling. Fishermen will be happy too, coastal lagoons are rich in tarpon and snook, and many of the hotels offer sport fishing for marlin and sailfish. In addition, Majahual has long been the place from which divers and sightseers embark for Chinchorro Bank, the world-famous atoll located 30 km offshore.
The turnoff to Majahual is 145 km north of Chetumal on Carretera/Highway 307 and well marked.
