The Costa Maya in its pristine state has two settlements large enough to be called villages, Majahual and Xcalak; but Xcalak has always had something Majahual doesn’t, the distinction of being the southernmost community not only in the state of Quintana Roo, but in the nation (on Mexico’s eastern flank). For a long time the town’s only visitors were divers on the way to Chinchorro, but with the Costa Maya project in the wings, Xcalak has begun to put time and energy into the creation of low impact services designed for the ecotourist market. Beach-front lodging runs from no-frills bungalows to small hotels, and facilities for boating, birdwatching, diving and sport fishing are in place. Area beaches are attractive and there are several lagoons nearby.
Xcalak has a landing strip, and can be reached via Majahual, or by water via the new ferry service operating out of Chetumal, which is the faster route if you’re in Chetumal to begin with.
