The Cocodrilo Dorado Cenote (sinkhole of the golden crocodile) is a gem of a site located along the Hondo River, in the hills en route to La Unión. According to a local legend, a golden crocodile inhabits the depths of the cenote and occasionally makes an appearance.
Tours are booked through agencies in Chetumal and usually include river travel, a spot of kayaking along a stream that flows into the Hondo River (Estero Franco), meals, lodging and transportation to the embarkation point. The Cocodrilo Dorado camp is rustic but adequate, with tents.
This is a great getaway for nature lovers. Birders will be in their element, there are plenty of jungle trails, best explored at dawn when the birds are at their most active. A 75-meter limestone bluff with a good rock face for climbing and absailing overlooks the cenote.
