 This forest reserve is located between Chetumal and La Unión. The villagers of Tres Garantías are farmers and woodsmen who live off the land, exploiting the resources of their tropical forest habitat, specifically its precious hardwoods (mahogany, cedar, pucté and ramón). A few families have turned portions of their acreage into a reserve designed to protect the land and its resources and to generate additional income for the farmers who are in the process of creating ecotourism projects.
The La Pirámide camp is located within the reserve. It offers the hospitality of rustic cabins with basic services.
Guided tours of the forest provide visitors with the chance to learn about the jungle, its towering trees, its giant ferns and varied wildlife; its jaguar, deer, tapir, peccary, fox and its hundreds of species of bird, such as the toucan and chachalaca. You may even hear the eerie call of the howler monkey as it echoes through the forest with tremendous force.
Visits to Tres Garantías are booked through travel agencies in Chetumal; a minimum of eight days advance notice is required.
