The Yucatán Peninsula, of which Quintana Roo forms part, is a relatively young landscape. A huge shelf of limestone, it emerged from the sea during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods. It has thin soils, a tropical climate and is covered by jungle, marsh, mangroves and coastal scrub. The offshore reefs form part of the second longest barrier reef system in the world.
