Local wildlife

A variety of wildlife lives in the mangroves and jungle of the Hotel Zone. Birds are abundant, herons, ibis, brown pelicans, magnificent frigate birds, gulls, ospreys, terns and cormorants can be spotted in the lagoon or patrolling the beaches. Iguanas, some up to a meter long, can be observed sunning themselves on walls and rocks in the Hotel Zone. City parks and the jungles that surround the urban area are home to flycatchers, orioles, warblers, doves, swallows, woodpeckers, hawks, buzzards, hummingbirds, parrots and the occasional toucan. Mammals include raccoons, squirrels, fruit bats, coatimundis and possums.
