Work on Project Cancún began in 1970. The first order of business was to clear the jungle and fill in enough of the lagoon to have room to build on (the Pok-ta-Pok Golf Course is built entirely on landfill!). Nothing like Cancún had ever been attempted; engineers, architects and advertising executives faced tremendous obstacles which they overcame by thinking creatively. Some of the big names are Javier Solórzano, who is credited with planning downtown Cancún; José María de la Torre and Carlos Náder, both of whom contributed to the final ‘look’ of the Hotel Zone. Náder died in an airplane crash and Avenida Náder was named for him.
