El meco

The most important mainland site in the Cancún area is El Meco, located north of downtown Cancún in the Isla Mujeres municipio or district. Access to the site is off the Puerto Juárez-Punta Sam highway, right before the ferry dock at Punta Sam (the northernmost of the two docks in the area.)

El Meco is a post-Classic site that may have been one of the more important communities in northern Quintana Roo.

The site’s civic-religious center has 14 structures still standing, among them, the tallest in this part of Quintana Roo from whose top there is an excellent view of Chacmochchuc Lagoon and the Caribbean. El Meco is protected by marshlands and mangroves and looks out over the Caribbean. Take insect repellent if you decide to visit the site.
