Mexico outshines other countries when it comes to silver. What began as an ancient art is now a modern-day symbol of national pride. After the Conquest, Mexico was one of the first New World nations to mine and ship quantities of silver overseas, and it is still a leader in silver production today. Talented silversmiths produce fabulous jewelry, original creations and reproductions of pre-Hispanic designs, encrusted with semi-precious stones, everything from rings, necklaces and earrings to unusual decorative items. Wide selections in engraved and filigree pieces including flasks, boxes and cases can be found in most markets and malls. To be sterling silver, the piece must bear the stamp "925", meaning 925 parts pure silver and 25 parts alloy (for strength).
