Cancún's reefs are part of a system, a collection of formations at varying distances from shore and from each other. Water depth, reef profile and resident sea life are the variables that characterize the different reefs and the diving experience each offers. Chitales, depth 18-20 ft., has a lot of elkhorn coral, sea fans, sponges, surgeonfishes, snappers, and tangs. Lavandera and Cuevones, at 15-25 ft, are small chains of coral covered with sponges, anemones, crustaceans, molluscs and impressive sea fans; Cuevones is also riddled with nooks and crannies and small caves, home to sharks and moray eels plus dozens of species of tropical fish. Other reefs go by such names as Manchones, Grampín, Herradura, San Toribio, El Túnel and San Miguel.
