 The earliest evidence of human occupation dates to the Late pre-Classic period, 300 B.C. to the Early Classic A.D. 300. The population continued to increase, peaking during the island’s heyday in the post-Classic period, A.D.1200 to 1600. At that time its many communities were connected by a system of stone roads.
