The goddess Ixchel

Ixchel was a major deity in the Maya pantheon of gods and the center of her cult was in Cozumel. Her consort was Itzamná, god of wisdom and knowledge, and together they were the creator couple. Ixchel was associated with the moon, after the sun, the most important body in the heavens. She reigned over the forces of fertility in all its many manifestations, principally the harvest and childbirth. She was also the goddess of medicine and weaving. Women from all over the Maya World made the dangerous journey to her island shrine.
