 Swallows

 The island’s original name was Cuzamil, Maya for ‘land of the swallows’, and the bird still visits in great numbers when migrating between North and South America.
Cozumel differs from the other offshore islands in the region in both origin and size. It began life as a coral reef and finished as a limestone shelf, same as the peninsula. It’s carpeted with jungle and its waters are more than 600 meters deep.
