The island is a verdant plain of jungle with trees up to 20 meters high, and mangroves and dune vegetation on the coast.
Cozumel is home to most of the creatures found on the mainland and several endemic species, animals found only on the island. They include the dwarf raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus), the Cozumel coatimundi (Nasua nelsoni) and four species of bird which rarely, if ever leave the island despite the short distance to shore. The two most common of these are the Cozumel wren (Troglodytes beani) and the Cozumel Pinto (Spindalis zena.)
