Reefs

Along the western or leeward coast are about 25 reefs of diverse size and description. Some are in reasonably shallow, tranquil waters and appropriate for novice divers; others are a challenge for the experienced, and still others are suitable for folks of intermediate skills. The characteristics of each reef and its respective currents allow for different dive techniques and ‘drift diving’ – where you’re pulled along by the current, viewing the walls of coral in passing – is one of them. Drift diving is the norm for the western side of the island where calm seas and strong currents are the prevailing conditions. The tourists of Cozumel support more than 100 different dive shops. Only certified, card-carrying divers can dive without on-site instruction. When choosing a dive shop, check that it has all its permits and meets the safety standards required by law.
