 Boat trips can also be arranged to Ojo de Agua Yalahau, a freshwater spring/cenote in the mangroves on the mainland and to the Río Lagartos Reserve in the Yucatán. True adventurers might be able to persuade a fisherman to take them to through the lagoon, mangroves and jungle to Boca Iglesia, the ruins of a 16th-century church. This colonial monument is all that remains of a shortlived Spanish garrison founded during the first expedition to conquer the Maya. Cabo Catoche and Boca Iglesia are in the area known as Ekab. An important chiefdom in ancient times, it was one of the first to be visited by the Spaniards in 1517. Unexplored Mayan ruins dot the area.
