Cabo Catoche is the cape at the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, and the place where the Caribbean meets the Gulf of Mexico in a mingling of turquoise, emerald and aquamarine waters. The combination of nutrient-laden ocean currents and the upwelling of cooler waters provide optimum conditions for marine life and the area is important for the fishermen of Holbox who bring in catches of shrimp, shark, octopus and a variety of fish. The island boasts a fine stretch of deserted shoreline ideal for beachcombing – a variety of shells of all shapes and sizes wash up on the sand. During the summer months the rare hawksbill turtle leaves the sea to lay its eggs on the island's shores. Prized for its carapace, used to make tortoiseshell, the hawksbill is now protected by international law.
