Local fishermen will rent their boats for trips to the Yalahau lagoon (also known as Conil lagoon) where countless species of bird nest in the mangroves and marshes, the Isla de Pajaros (Bird Island), Isla Morada and the Ch'ich islet. Great blue and boat-billed herons, great white, snowy and reddish egrets, brown and white pelicans, ibis, roseate spoonbills, osprey and the occasional flock of flamingos, are just some of the species that can be spotted during the excursion. Dolphins sometimes play in the wakes of boats crossing the lagoon. Yalahau and the surrounding marshes are part of the Yum Balam Reserve.
