Isla Mujeres is a laid-back provincial island, half Caribbean and half Mexican. Its people are fishermen, divers and shopkeepers by vocation and inclination. Nobody’s in a rush, everybody knows everybody, and foreigners are welcome. Since the late 50s, the island has been a destination in its own right and visitors measure their stays in weeks, not days. The locals get around on mopeds and bikes. Downtown Isla is a cluster of shops, informal restaurants and cafés, and bars where the strains of reggae, salsa, rock, jazz and romantic ballads can be heard. Dinner or a drink at a waterfront restaurant or bar on Playa Norte or Cocos is an enjoyable way to spend the evening.
