The only English-speaking nation in Central America, Belize offers a glimpse of the Caribbean with its wooden houses, cuisine and music. Ancient Maya centers of note are Caracol, Cuello, Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Lubaantun and Lamanai. The country is also filled with nature reserves: the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Sanctuary, Mountain Pine Ridge, Columbia Forest Reserve and others. Good beaches include those at Dangriga, Placencia and San Pedro, with the longest reef in the hemisphere and 200 cays right off shore.
There are flights to Belize City from Cancún or travelers can drive or take the bus across the border from Chetumal. The capital is Belmopán but Belize City is still the most important city.
