Valladolid and Izamal

During the Colonial period, several cities were founded in the Yucatán, of note are Valladolid and Izamal. Founded in 1543, Valladolid would become the colonial capital of eastern Yucatán. Buildings of note include the San Bernadino Church, the Convent of Sisal (16th century) and the Cathedral (17th century).

Izamal is a city with a past. Its architecture, even today is a mix of Maya and Spanish Colonial. The bright yellow convent and church, constructed by the notorious Friar Diego de Landa in 1552, is the center of worship for Our Lady of Izamal, patron saint of Yucatán, one of the two most venerated icons in the region. Valladolid is 160, and Izamal 268 kilometers from Cancún via the toll road (autopista) or federal Highway 180 to Mérida.
