The pride of the group are its eight stelae and nine circular altars. Stela 1 is important for bearing four initial series dates, all of which correspond to the 8th century A.D.
The Maya used stelae to commemorate important events, such as births, deaths, accessions, alliances, marriages and great victories, and to mark the passing of katuns (a period of 20 years in the Mayan calendar). These free-standing, stone slabs were dated and etched with figures and hieroglyphics that described the incident being commemorated and are found at sites throughout the Maya World.
