The Nohoch Mul Group

The Maya took advantage of natural elevations in the land to build their most imposing piece of architecture. Structure 1, or the Nohoch Mul pyramid for which the group is named, rises 42 m off the plain and is the tallest ancient building in northern Yucatán. Its southern face has two flights of stairs; both leading to rooms referred to as temples 1 and 2. The remains of boar, monkey and numerous birds were dug up in the temples. In Temple 2 is a fragment of Stela 29; an offering of conch shells and jade buried at its base.

About 70 m southeast of the pyramid is Stela 20, the best preserved piece of monumental sculpture found at the site. The stela shows five figures; the principal one stands on the back of a bound captive, the others, all males, are off to the side in a posture of reverence.
