 The sacbe of Cobá were built to facilitate the city’s political and economic control of its territory and were also used to advantage during religious events that called for processions.
The sacbeob can be divided into regional, rural and local roads. Two regional roads radiate from the site: Cobá to Yaxuná, at 101 km is the longest sacbe in the Maya World and Cobá to Ixil is 19 km long. Archaeologists have numbered them 1 and 16 respectively. Access/exit ramps were sited at intervals along both routes.Eight rural roads have been discovered. These linked villages with the city. The 35 local roads connected the rural and the regional roads to each other. Connecting roads were from one to 20 m wide, and anywhere from six to 728 m in length. At the start of Sacbe 3 (in the Cobá Group) is a smooth stela on which items, notices etc. were presumably painted on a layer of stucco.
