Along the Nuevo Xcan - Cobá road is the small community of Punta Laguna. The lake for which the village is named is near the road and there are minor ruins in the area. One of the community leaders is a man called Don Serapio. Together with his sons and a few villagers, he offers boat trips on the lake and jungle walks. It’s best to take the tour at either dawn or dusk, for your chances of spotting spider monkeys foraging in the trees and seeing some of the birds that inhabit the area increase considerably. The jungle harbors deer, peccary, and the smaller wild cats: margay, jaguarundi and ocelot. There are turtles and crocodiles in the lake. Tours provide income for these people, most of whom are farmers and beekeepers. A good time to visit is May 3, the festival of the rain god Chaac.
