Tankah

The only sign marking this site is the temple on the left-hand side of the highway and the dirt track that runs next to it. Tankah was one of the most important ports on the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula during the Late Classic and Post-Classic periods.

Another track with a sign reading “Casa del Cenote” leads to the beach, a seafood restaurant, some small hotels and houses. A cenote lies in the mangroves behind the beach and is connected to the ocean by subterranean tunnels which should only be explored by trained divers with a professional guide. You can swim and snorkel the cenote’s surface and the reefs in the bay.
