The Descending God

Honey provided the ancient Maya with sustenance and an important trade item. The honey bee was revered as the god Ah Muzencab, the descending god, who always appears head first, as if in a sting position. Carved images of Ah Muzencab (“he who guards the honey”) can also be seen at nearby Cobá, and Sayil and Chichén Itzá in the Yucatán. He seems to have been an important deity for the Maya and was one of the sky bearers in ancient mythology. Incense burners showing the god carrying honeycombs have been unearthed in the area.

Economically priced lodging is available in the village of Tulum located almost next door to the ruins, and there are a slew of lodging options along the coast south of Tulum, en route to Sian Ka’an. These range in price and quality, and many are built exclusively with regional materials.
