Windswept Xcacel, with its crescent-shaped bay is a romantic spot, a great place to watch the sun and moon rise over the Caribbean. Sea turtles nest here in the summer, and the beach was recently declared a sanctuary for this endangered animal.
The jungle-entrenched cenote just south of the bay is a favorite haunt on weekends. Camping facilities; seafood at a little palapa restaurant. Xcacel is 51 km (40 mins) south of Playa del Carmen. At the time of going to press the protected area status of this site was in doubt.
