Isla Tamalcab

Tamalcab is an island of white sands and calm waters sitting in the middle of Chetumal Bay (two kilometers off shore). Its tropical vegetation is forever rustling in answer to a permanent, if gentle sea breeze. Folks go here to fish, swim, snorkel, dive and relax. The surrounding waters are peppered with ojos de agua or fresh water underground springs which well up through cracks and crevices in the rock.

There are no services on Tamalcab so you must pack in everything you’ll want, including food and water. The island has unrestored Mayan ruins (platforms, plazas and columns) and is home to species such as agouti, a rodent the size of a small dog, spider monkeys, coatimundi and a variety of birds including blue heron, snowy egret, great white egret and osprey.

Boat transportation to tiny Tamalcab is available from Calderitas.
